Porter Endowment Video Tapes and DVDs
The Porter Endowment currently produces two types of video tapes, and makes
these available to educational institutions and individuals. These currently
are being copied to DVD, and they will be available in both formats in the future.
Historical tapes/DVDs: Several videos have been produced by Trustee
Emerita Mary Bonneville to document the early history of cell biology, especially
focussing on the scientists who played key roles in these developments. The
following titles are available:
- Keith Porter and Early Cell Biology
- Against the Tide: Berta Scharer
Porter Lecture tapes: Each of the Porter Lectures at the Annual Meeting
of the American Society for Cell Biology has been video taped, beginning with
the first lecture by Lew Tilney in 1982.
Keith Porter Lectures
- 1982 Lew Tilney - Organization of actin in auditory hair cells: What actin
has to tell us if we listen.
- 1983 J. Richard McIntosh - Cellular actions on chromosomes at mitosis.
- 1984 David D. Sabatini - The maiden voyage of membrane proteins to the cell
surface: In search of mechanisms and pathways for intracellular sortling.
- 1985 John E. Heuser - Deep-etch views of cells and molecules.
- 1986 Gunter Blobel - Protein traffic across membranes.
- 1987 Michael S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein - How cells control cholesterol.
- 1988 Marc W. Kirschner - Control of the cell cycle.
- 1989 Thomas D. Pollard - Beyond cell motility and cytoskeleton: The integration
of cytoplasmic contractile proteins into other cellular processes including
PI signalling and cell cycle control.
- 1990 Kai L. Simons - Biogenesis of cell surface polarity.
- 1991Christiane Nusslein-Volhard - Axis determination in the Drosophila
embryo.
- 1992 Joan A. Steitz - snRNPs: Building blocks of nuclear function.
- 1993 Masatoshi Takeichi - Control of multicellular organization by cell
adhesion molecules.
- 1994 James E. Darnell, Jr. - Signaling genes from the cell surface: The
JAK-STAT pathway.
- 1995 Leland H. Hartwell - The cell cycle.
- 1996 Elaine V. Fuchs - Of mice and men: Genetic disorders of the cytoskeleton.
- 1997 Pietro DeCamilli - Building a vesicle: Insights from membrane traffic
at the synapse.
- 1998 James A. Spudich - Myosin on the move: From single molecules to cells.
- 1999 Elizabeth H. Blackburn - New ways of thinking about telomeres and teleromase.
- 2000 Joan Massague - How cells read TGF-beta signals.
- 2001 Susan L. Lindquist - Misfolded proteins and self assembly: from mad
cows to "psi-chotic" yeast and beyond.
- 2002 Eric F. Wieschaus - Time and space at the interface of cell and developmental
biology.
- 2003 Roger Tsien - Breeding molecules to spy on cells.
These tapes currently are in VHS format, and some of the early ones have been
edited and can be borrowed for educational use from the American Society for
Cell Biology, at no charge. Return postage will be provided by the borrower.
VHS copies of these tapes can also be purchased for educational use from the
Endowment for a nominal charge (contact the Endowment by email at leed@peachey.net).
An active program is underway to edit the rest of the tapes and to transfer
them to DVD, so that they all can be made available.
